Summary

Metal fabricators select and prepare metal stock for fabrication to make or repair metal structures used in defence equipment and facilities. Metal fabricators study blueprints, drawings and specifications to determine job requirements. They join metal sections using various welding techniques, as well as cut metal sections by using flame cutting torches and metal cutting machines.

VET pathways

To become a metal fabricator, you usually need to complete an apprenticeship in engineering fabrication:

  • MEM31925 – Certificate III in Engineering – Fabrication Trade (Sheetmetal working)
  • MEM40119 - Certificate IV in Engineering

Tertiary pathways

To broaden your educational opportunities and expand your career prospects, it is worth considering pursuing a Bachelor's degree or higher in mechanical engineering.

Indicative salary range

Low end - $75,000
High end - $130,000
